Every month, millions of households receive their electricity bill, but very few really know what they are paying for. Contracted power, tolls, charges, taxes, free market, regulated market… these are concepts that regularly appear on the electricity bill and that many consumers still find difficult to interpret.
This reality highlights a problem that goes far beyond the amount of a bill: the lack of energy literacy.
Only one in ten consumers fully understands their bill
According to data from the Spanish Consumers and Users Organisation (OCU), only 11 % of Spanish consumers say they fully understand their electricity bill. More than half admit they do not understand it, and a large majority believe they are probably paying more than they should.
Although the electricity bill has evolved to offer more information, it has also become more complex. In the free market, each supplier can structure certain sections differently, while the regulated market uses more homogeneous formats. In both cases, correctly interpreting the concepts requires knowledge that most of the population has never received. This means that the more misinformation or lack of knowledge on the part of customers, the greater the risk of paying more than €200 a year in overcharges.
The energy transition demands better informed consumers
In recent years, energy has come to occupy a central place in the economy and in everyday life. The development of renewable energy, individual or collective self-consumption, electric vehicles, home batteries and the electrification of buildings are transforming the way we produce and consume energy.
However, this technological change is not always accompanied by a greater understanding on the part of the public.
Making decisions such as choosing a tariff, adjusting contracted power, installing solar panels or assessing a solar neighbourhood requires understanding how the electricity system works and how all of this is reflected in the bill.
When that knowledge does not exist, it is much more difficult to identify savings opportunities or to sign up for the option that best suits the real needs of each household.

What should every consumer know about their bill?
Although the bill may seem complex, there are some basic concepts that every consumer should know:
- The difference between the free market and the regulated market.
- What contracted power means and how it affects the fixed cost.
- How electricity consumption is calculated.
- What tolls and regulated charges are.
- Which taxes apply.
- How to compare offers from different suppliers.
- How to detect additional services that increase the cost of the bill.
Understanding these elements makes it possible to take better informed decisions and avoid signing up for products or services that do not provide real value.
Energy literacy: an unresolved issue in Spain
For many years, energy was perceived as an exclusively technical field, reserved for engineers or sector specialists. However, today’s reality shows that it directly affects all citizens.
Energy shapes business competitiveness, the family budget, mobility, building renovation, self-consumption and environmental sustainability.
That is why talking about energy literacy means much more than learning to read a bill. It means understanding how the energy system works in order to actively participate in the transition towards a more efficient and sustainable model.
Training, a key tool for facing the challenges of the sector
The energy transition is also generating a growing demand for specialised professionals: energy consultants, energy managers, installers, engineers, self-consumption technicians and energy efficiency specialists are some of the profiles that companies are increasingly looking for.
At the same time, many people want to update their knowledge to adapt to a rapidly evolving labour market. In this context, specialised training becomes a strategic element both for those already working in the sector and for those wishing to join it.
Reazziona Academy: practical training to understand energy
Reazziona Academy, the energy academy of the Group’s supplier, Reazziona, works with a clear objective: to bring energy knowledge closer to professionals, companies and citizens.
Our methodology combines the experience of working professionals with a practical vision of today’s energy market, covering issues such as energy efficiency, contract management, self-consumption, regulation, energy retailing and bill interpretation.
We believe that improving energy literacy not only helps train better professionals, but also better informed consumers capable of making responsible decisions.
Energy needs knowledge
The energy transition does not depend solely on new technologies or infrastructure investment.
It also requires citizens capable of understanding how the energy system works and professionals prepared to lead that change. Understanding an electricity bill, knowing the differences between tariffs or correctly interpreting the costs associated with consumption should no longer be considered specialised knowledge, but an increasingly necessary skill.
Investing in energy training means investing in better decisions, greater efficiency and a society better prepared to face the challenges of the future.
At Reazziona Academy we believe that this future begins with knowledge.
