What is the CAES system?
The Energy Savings Certificates (CAE) system is an official tool regulated by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) under Royal Decree 36/2023.
1 CAE = 1 kWh/year
Each certificate verifiably guarantees that a final energy saving of 1 kWh per year has been achieved through an energy efficiency action.
Direct monetisation
It allows companies to recover part of their investment by selling their certified energy savings to energy retailers (Obligated Parties) on the national market.
Official verification
The entire process is audited by an Energy Savings Verifier accredited by ENAC, providing full transparency and legal certainty.
Eligible actions from the Official Catalogue
Practically any renovation or investment that reduces electricity, gas or fossil fuel consumption is eligible to issue CAES. The most notable in MITECO’s catalogue are:
🏢 Buildings and Services
Replacing boilers with aerothermal or high-efficiency heat pumps, insulating façades and roofs, renewing windows and smart LED lighting.
🏭 Industrial Sector
Replacing motors, compressors and pumps with high-efficiency models, recovering waste heat from fumes or processes and optimising steam systems.
🚗 Mobility and Transport
Installing electric vehicle charging points, renewing fleets with hybrid or electric vehicles and optimising route logistics.
