RL.1, RL.2 and RL.3 are not commercial names: they are access charges assigned according to the annual gas consumption of the supply point. To choose a tariff you have to compare within the right band and add the fixed term and the variable term.

Differences between RL.1, RL.2 and RL.3

The distributor assigns the access charge based on consumption. It is not freely chosen to get a better price. If annual consumption changes, the band can be reviewed in line with the applicable rules.
The two prices you have to add up
Fixed term
This is a monthly amount paid even when there is no consumption. It weighs especially heavily on second homes or households that use little gas. A low variable price may not make up for a high fixed charge.
Variable term
This is multiplied by the kWh consumed. It becomes more important in homes with heating and high consumption. To compare two offers, apply both prices to the same year of consumption and add taxes, meter rental and services.
Free market and regulated tariff
In the free market each retailer sets the price and conditions of its offer. The gas Tariff of Last Resort has regulated prices and access requirements. Do not compare the tariff name alone: review the total cost, the duration, the revisions and any added services.
Checklist before switching gas supplier
- Check your annual consumption and the access charge shown on your bill.
- Calculate twelve fixed terms plus the variable term applied to your kWh.
- Add taxes, meter and additional services.
- Review lock-in, renewal and the price validity date.
